Introducing: Unrulr Portfolios

For years, we’ve been grappling with a big question: “So what?”

Educators and learners using Unrulr have been capturing incredible documentation: photos, videos, reflections, and evidence of growth that make learning visible in the moment. But so many folks have asked:

How do we pull all of this documentation together?

What’s the bigger story of a learner’s growth?

How do students share their growth in a more polished, summative way?

Those questions led us here.

And today, we’re thrilled to introduce Unrulr Portfolios.

Why Portfolios?

Unrulr Moments have always been about the process— those authentic snapshots of learning that happen along the way.

Portfolios are about the story that emerges when you connect those moments over time.

We built Portfolios because educators told us they needed a way for students to move from documentation to storytelling. To show what they did and how they’ve grown.

The problem? Traditional portfolio tools felt clunky, had too much of a learning curve, or were detached from where documentation actually happens. Teachers didn’t want to send students off to build websites from scratch. Students didn’t want to learn another tool.

So, we made something different:

  • Dead simple to use. Shallow learning curve, no website-builder complexity.

  • Seamless curation. Students can pull in the documentation they’ve already created in Unrulr. No moving files around.

  • Flexible, by design. Works for capstones, semester reflections, CTE pathways, student-led conferences, or even college and career readiness portfolios.

  • Built for both sides. Teachers can scaffold the experience with templates; students still have enough creative freedom to make it their own.

What Portfolios Are (and How They Work)

Check out Emma's Portfolio on Unrulr.

If Moments are the formative, Portfolios are the summative.

They’re often the answer to that “so what?” of documenting in Unrulr. A goal to work towards. A celebration of their documentation and reflection efforts.

Each portfolio is made up of customizable pages, and every page includes three simple sections:

  • Summary: Add a featured media item (image, video, audio recording, or PDF) paired with a written intro to set the stage.

  • Evidence: Pull in your existing Unrulr posts and journeys to show your growth.

  • Highlights: Select standout elements from your evidence and pair them with reflection to tell the deeper story.

Every portfolio starts with a Cover Page, where learners introduce the portfolio as a whole (or themselves), setting context for what’s inside and what story they’re telling.

Educators can also create Portfolio Templates that provide structure, guidance, and instructions for students, while still leaving room for personal creativity. There’s also the option to add data visualizations to pull out even greater detail from your learners’ documentation.

When to Use Portfolios

Portfolios are flexible enough to fit anywhere reflection and storytelling matter.

Here are a few use cases where portfolios might be useful:

  • End-of-semester or capstone showcases

  • Demonstrating progress toward state standards or competencies

  • Mid-year portfolio reviews or student-led conferences

  • Sharing learning with college admissions or potential employers

Basically, anytime you want to answer “So what?”, Portfolios are your friend.

How to Get Started

Getting started is simple.

Educators can create a Portfolio Template (from the Create tab or the new Portfolios section on the Self tab). Start with a Cover Page and build out any additional pages your learners need, and include instructions to guide them.

Once shared, your learners can start building their own portfolios right away, starting with the template as a foundation. Updates to the template populate to learners’ portfolios automatically.

The Bigger Picture

Portfolios are a bridge between documentation and storytelling, between learning as it happens and learning as it’s understood.

They help learners make sense of their journey.

They give educators a lens into understanding and accomplishment.

And they make it effortless to share the story of growth: clearly, beautifully, and authentically.
